For those who follow my twitter feed @artofpoliticsca, you’re
probably getting tired of hearing about Ukraine 24/7 through the eyes of
journalists and more, on the ground in Ukraine.
From an emergency response/disaster management perspective,
it has been very interesting to watch events unfold, sometimes exactly as I’ve
expected them to. Part of training for any firefighter involves planning for
terrorist attacks, emergency responses to extreme situations, emergency
management, border conflict and security issues (if you train/work in a border
area), and more. It’s not just putting out a fire.
From a personal perspective, as I said on twitter, my
grandfather, deceased, was an immigrant to Canada from Ukraine, as is my
grandmother.
I’ve spent some time following the journalists, bloggers,
and photographers I’m listing today, and if you aren’t following or haven’t
read any of their work, I highly recommend you do. The reality is that they are
putting their lives on the line to make sure that the truth, not rumors, not propaganda,
and not just opinion, is heard.
There’s been some interesting and pivotal moments for some
of these journalists. Simon Shuster, for example, along with Anshell Pfeffer
and others, captured some stunning photos and a story they, nor the world, will
ever forget about the unarmed Ukrainian soldiers attempting to take back their
base at Belbek. http://world.time.com/2014/03/04/ukraine-crimea-belbek-russia/ http://www.haaretz.com/news/world/.premium-1.577781
There is also Shaun Walker, who broke out with an amazing
story from inside the marine base at Feodosia, Crimea, about how Ukrainian
soldiers “politely told them [Russian soldiers] to get lost”. He’s had a few
historically significant stories the past few days, and has had lots of trolls
on twitter (and likely other places) who refuse to believe that yes indeed
Russian troops (not local defence militias) really are in Ukraine. He has some great news stories here: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/04/ukraine-russia-warning-shots-military ; http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/02/ukraine-crisis-russia-crimea-standoff and http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/05/un-envoy-crimea-quits-anger-pro-moscow-yatsenyuk
Today’s huge story so far (imho), came from James Mates, who
was with the UN representative, Robert Serry and not only had a play by play of
the café incident but also wrote and tweeted about, Serry’s [mandatory] flight
out of Ukraine. Read about that here: http://www.itv.com/news/2014-03-05/un-envoy-and-itv-news-journalists-trapped-by-local-militia-in-crimea-cafe/

There is some great journalism coming out of Ukraine, and I
urge you all to take a look. Tracking the story is not an easy job at the best
of times, and doing it in dangerous conditions deserves our respect, and
attention. Stay tuned for features!
